Get Hard - I'm With Geek Review

Once in a while, when we're very lucky and have been extra good, a film comes along with the legs of a good wine. A residual effect that lasts for days - even weeks - after a single watch. A film that will, when you're walking down the street or making a cup of tea, wriggle its way into your consciousness and make you question everything. Whilst these films don’t always have the highest budget, they are a product of incredible amounts of talent, hard work, passion and perseverance.

Get Hard is not one of these films.

In roughly fifteen years, due to the hands of man, the world will be mostly water. England will cease to exist and as we bubble underneath the Atlantic, we will be mocked by our Scottish brethren as they stand atop their Highlands. Thanks to climate change the Earth’s sudden, yet inevitable betrayal, will coat our lands with inches of water and unless we learn how to swim or grow blubber (us fatties already a level ahead of keeping warm, thank you,) we’ll all be long gone. So it’s natural that film-makers have explored the futuristic deep to different levels of success including that awful dreadful piece, Water World.

Coming to Asia House Film Festival, however, is NUOC 2030 coming all the way from Vietnam.

Autonomous - Asia House Film Festival

Autonomous is a science-fiction short which asks questions concerning humanity, our future and the nature of our identity as both a species and as individuals. This Swedish film takes quite a complex viewpoint. It works as a documentary, but is presented from the viewpoint of a dystopian future.

This lends the narrative an objective framing, but it is permeated by subjective and emotional perceptions. It succeeds, as all good science fiction pieces should, in pondering and questioning the conclusions of present scientific developments and their repercussions for mankind.

This weekend sees 2015’s Asia House Film Festival kick off with an almighty array of films that bring some much needed light to films from the titular continent. Ranging from different eras to brand new directors and artists, Asia House is ready and raring to go with a weekend full of brilliant films such as Remote Control, Punk in Nyamar and In The Absence Of The Sun. The cinematic triumph from Asia sees an eclectic range of genre’s from quirky romantic films to stirring Westerns and it is undeniably strong programme.

We sat down with Jasper Sharp, the curator of the festival, to talk about the thrilling weekend ahead!

We’ve spoken about it before but we love costume design. It is a crucial element of cinema that, if done impeccably, will make you gasp loudly. Costume design evokes an array of emotions and connects you automatically to a period and landscape. From Medieval and Victorian to the Roaring Twenties and the Fifties, costume design has truly shaped our characters and brings the audience immediately into that time.
Heck, even dystopian futures have their own design.

Zorro, Puss in Boots, a vampire and now appearing in latest SpongeBob Movie: A Sponge Out Of Water Burger Beard it seems; Antonio Banderas is a man of many talents. Of course, comedy is no stranger to this versatile actor. When we caught up with him at the Apple Store Regents Street last week, he openly admitted that he had never heard of SpongeBob until he wasoffered the role. Naturally, this man became very familiar with as evil, gnarly pirate Burger Beard and had some very positive things to say about the industry as a whole.

Yes, the Nickelodeon television show about a sponge, a crab, a starfish, an octopus and a squirrel is has spun off into a brand new film. This time, they set out to save their town from social disorder in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

If you think about Asian cinema then the countries that first spring to mind would be as predictable as the films that follow. There’s India and Bollywood. Japan and Horror or Anime. China and Martial Arts. It seems that people in the Western Hemisphere, unless you are into this specific niche, don’t really know that Asia isn’t just a collection of for countries. It’s a continent that streams and produces plenty of evocative, whimsical and brilliant films. Which is exactly what Asia House Film Festival is aiming to showcase with their excellent event this weekend.

Especially as this year, it is dedicating part of its event to Mongolian Treasures.

“There’s no place for us here.” Words spoken by Naomi to her friend and former lover Gia, it’s a sad and painful truth expressed as much, if not with greater weight by filmmaker Lucky Kuswandi, as he surveys the metropolitan cacophony quickly building in his native Jakarta. Looking on with a melancholic, almost elegiac gaze, Kuswandi follows the stories of three women over the course of a single night as they search for stability and comfort in a city that through commerce, globalisation and religion has become the easiest place to disconnect from everyone around them. In his latest effort, Kuswandi ruminates on how possible it is to find something worth holding onto In the Absence of the Sun.
