You can have your Stallones. Keep your Van Damme. Segal? Pfft, move over Steven; there is a new action hero in town. Liam Neeson has come kicking and punching his way into everyone's heart. Once appearing in dramas and more, Neeson has now become regular feature of action movies. What with Taken, Taken 2, we swear this isn't Taken, Unknown, and now this Non-Stop. Or as we have affectionally called it Taken on a Plane; Neeson has pushed everything aside, yelled 'fuck it' and come in guns blazing. And boy, are we thankful for it because Neeson is pretty much the only thing that saves this air disaster movie.

Obviously, we know these awards better as the Oscars. Having gone for more than 80 years in the business of recognising art and artists (that's the mission statement, anyway), there has been a slew of awards handed out to those deemed worthy of them over all that time, and even more nominations to stand beside them. Now, some of these artists have proved themselves to be regular fixtures in the Oscar-nominee process, appearing more than once, perhaps in more than a single category... maybe even eventually winning. Then, there are the others who garner maybe only one nomination over their career, recognised for just a single performance or script, which is subsequently forgotten about or overlooked in the subsequent years of solid work (or complete obscurity). Here, we'll look over 15 artists who have been recognised by the Academy for their work that you may have forgotten about, or maybe even didn't know at all. by Paul Costello Before I continue, I’m going do this: SPOILER WARNING!! GO WATCH THIS FILM BEFORE CONTINUING!! For the last of this month’s monologues from Actors Without Oscars, I’m looking at a monologue from one of the most notoriously unhappy names to be passed over for the win, the great philosopher Samuel L. Jackson. by Paul Costello There’s a scene in Ghostbusters 2, when Venkman, Stanz and Spengler are in court, being tried for causing damage that resulted in a citywide blackout. After the judge becomes a little too aggressive when addressing the court and unwittingly releases the ghosts of two murderers, the guys grab their proton packs and gear up to get rid of the spectral threat. When they turn on their packs, they do this: by Jo Johnstone Winning an Academy Award is a great honour. The highest award bestowed from the film industry and a moment where the world is watching you. After receiving nominations, doing interviews and arriving on the night all that is left is for the winning to accept the great award and give a speech. Theses few words should immortalise you in the eyes of your peers but for some it can have the exact opposite effect. So here is my run down of the very best and worst Oscar speeches. by Cookie N Screen There is a whole plethora of Batman movies, just look at our extensive list. From the animated to the dark, the amazing to the horrible. Batman has been the topic of so many films, it is no surprise that a merry band of fans would get together in order to make their own wBatman movie. Director Josh Crooks with the help of Kormorant Pictures, has created this short movie of our favourite caped crusader. The surprise here is that this film is pretty good. by Leah Stone This article contains spoilers Cast your mind back to every history lesson you have ever had. At some point in our lives we have all learnt about Hitler and Nazi Germany, Concentration Camps and World War Two. The Book Thief (a film based on the bestselling book by Australian author Markus Zusak) is set in Nazi Germany and shows us what life possibly could have been like in Germany living under Hitler’s Nazi regime. by Robbie Jones Ah the Oscar; there are a ton of actors who don’t prioritise this award and are in it for the love of the game. But surely it sits there at the back of their mind. Surely they must think now and again; “God, it would be nice to have one”. And there are some actors who get nominated/give amazing performances time and time again and audiences scream when they don’t make it to the stage. I’ve been in that position where I was filled with rage when someone misses out. But let’s face it: There are some actors who, no matter whether they want them or not, they’ll get on just fine without one. |
