It’s finally official. The announcement for who shall be playing Ant-Man in the film of the same title, is Paul Rudd.
Probably best known for his part in Anchorman, and appearing in other comedies such as Role Models and I Love You, Man. Apparently the first choice for Marvel (though Joseph Gordon-Levitt was rumoured to also be a first choice, at least until he got the Sandman gig), let’s have a look at Ant-Man and how he’ll fit into the Marvel Film Universe.

The original Ant-Man was Hank Pym, a physicist who discovered the Pym Particle, which enabled mass to be shunted or gained from an alternate dimension. This allowed him to change size, when combined with a helmet that granted him the ability to communicate with ants he became Ant-Man.
His ability to regulate size also let him keep his human strength when shrunk and granted increased stamina when giant. Hank also created Ultron, a sentient AI that you may recognise as the name of the ANT-agonist (for once, I’m not even sorry about that one) of the next Avengers movie.

Going off that information. Let’s make wild speculations on what could happen to link the two together. In the comics, Pym is a founding member of the Avengers, obviously impossible after the events of the first film (though he could have just been shrunk down the entire film and we didn’t realise, you never know...). It could always be possible he was a founding member of a prior Avengers style group that was disbanded, with this film covering the rise and fall. It should be mentioned that no plot has been given as of yet, so it could be this, or it could be entirely different.
Regardless, in the comics, it is Pym’s bitterness at being kicked off the Avengers that leads to him building Ultron as an attempt to get back in their good books, by setting it on the team, then saving them from it. Think of it like Syndrome in The Incredibles with the Omnidroid. Only misguided, not evil.

It also led to him hitting his own wife. No saying whether or not that will make it into the film.
Unfortunately, Pym won’t be introduced until after Age of Ultron, so if any of this is correct, it will be happening in a flashback. Though it could be similar to Captain America’s first outing and have us going through his backstory to show how he fits into the canon.
Directed by Edgar Wright, Ant-Man is scheduled to start filming next year for a 2015 release date, which will kick off “Phase Three” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Only Rudd is confirmed as appearing so far.
