The Book Thief, based on the book by Australian author Markus Zusak, follows the story of young Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse.) Set in Nazi Germany, Liesel is sent to live with her new foster parents after the death of her brother. At her brother’s funeral she takes one of his books in memory of him, but she is illiterate. When she arrives at her new home, her Papa (Geoffrey Rush) teaches her how. At a book burning ceremony, Liesel is forced to throw books onto the flames but later takes one that has not been burnt and takes it home. Throughout the film she gets into the habit of stealing books to read, especially after her family take in Max, a Jew, and hides him in their basement. Max and Liesel soon become fast friends by bonding over books.
Recently, 20th Century Fox have released exclusive clips of the film. One is of Liesel “borrowing” some books and the other a rather touching moment when Liesel’s foster father shows her a chalkboard ‘dictionary’ he had made for her. It also released featurettes giving us the behind-the-scenes knowledge about the casting of Sophie as Liesel and what made her so different from all of the people that auditioned for the role. We also get to see talks with director Brian Percival (Dowton Abbey) author Markus Zusak and cast members Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Ben Schnetzer, learning more about the film, how they planned it, where the idea for the book came from and the production process.
The Book Thief is penned for release on 26th February in the UK, and is set to be a heart-warming tale of a girl who finds utter solace in writing and in reading books.
