It seems these days that more and more alternate universes are being introduced into comic franchises, along with all other types of media. Sometimes they make sense to me. Sometimes they don't. Often it’s very interesting to see how things change.
The first time I was introduced to the concept of alternate universes I remember being immediately fascinated by it. One of my favourite cartoons was G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero. Those were the days. It had more explosions than Michael Bay could ever hope for! I distinctly remember Steeler, Clutch, and Grunt being transported to an alternate universe where Cobra was in charge of the world and what Joes were alive were deemed criminals and enemies of the state. Dreadnok police? Seems like bad comedy here in the real world. But, in that story it made perfect sense. The Baroness and Steeler together? But, she's Destro's girl! Not there! It was an interesting tale to say the least.
I was really big into the Marvel vs DC crossover in the 90s. Mainly it was because my friends and I had had long discussions over these match ups and they could finally be settled in print. Mainly I was hoping for a mighty Marvel smackdown. I didn't totally get my wish. But, I did see some awesome fights.
Writing this piece really got me to thinking what other alternate universes could be created by blending and crossing over. The possibilities are virtually endless. There are so many that would be so awesome in so many ways! Optimus Prime and Captain America team up? I might just wet my pants from excitement!
I'm sure, my loyal readers, that I might have stirred up some thoughts in your heads. What alternate universes would you like to see? What would you change? What's the craziest idea you can come up with? Until next time, keep on being awesome, no matter what universe you live in.
