Last week, we heard about J.K. Rowling’s incredible act of kindness towards a young lady, Cassidy, whose entire family had been murdered by Cassidy’s uncle. At the memorial service, Cassidy mentioned one of Dumbledore’s quotes, about finding light amongst the darkness. After Rowling caught wind of this, she sent Cassidy a care package, including a letter from “Dumbledore” himself. However, this isn’t the only act of kindness that the famed author has done over the past few years.
The two mentioned above are only a few of the kind things that Rowling has done over the past few years. After hand writing seven copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard (six of these would be gifted to six people who were closly involved with bringing the Potter books to the world), the seventh went up for auction. It was sold to Amazon for $3.98 million. The money went to Lumos (the Children’s High Level Group). In 2007, Rowling decided to publish the series of stories for the public. As of January 2010, sales of the book has raised over $17 million for the charity. Rowling has also spent years supporting a variety of Multiple Sclerosis charities. MS, unfortunately, was what caused Rowling’s mother to pass away at the age of 45. Rowling has said one of her biggest regrets was never telling her mum about Harry Potter before she died.
Other acts of kindness have included exchanging letters with a dying child and letting her in on the secrets of the future of Harry Potter. When the young girl passed away, the family set up a fund in her memory. Rowling donated $100,000 towards the fund, upon learning of this. However, one of the biggest things that J.K. Rowling has given the world is the Potter series itself. Seven books, and three small books, as well as eight films, have given millions the magic that so many were looking for. Thank you, J.K. Rowling, thank you.
