M.J. Rain is new to writing and has finally managed to get her first book, a Young Adult Novel, A Telltale Secret, published by Broken Bars Publishing. It has always been MJ Rain’s dream to write a story, and she has written not just one, but two. A Telltale Secret is only book one of a series of five books; she is currently writing the third book.

If you’re wondering why you haven’t seen this book out on the shelves of your favourite bookshops, or on the websites you procure your books from, that would be because it is not yet released! This I’m with Geek writer has been lucky enough to receive a copy and will be telling you all about this hidden gem.

*Five Keys. Two Parallel Universes. One Destiny.*

Willow lives in a seemingly perfect world with her sister and their nanny, on a planet where those who are deemed useless seem to vanish without a trace, along with those who speak of the forbidden keys. When she gets her chance to be of use, she begins on the path to her destiny when the magical key from her dreams is set in her possession. With it, she embarks on a journey to another world in search of her parents and slowly she uncovers the mysteries that surround her family’s past, present, and future. When she uncovers the deepest secret of them all, the difficult path ahead of her reveals the true purpose of her life.

*Come with me and discover what became of the people of Atlantis!*

MJ Rain’s story follows a nineteen year old girl named Willow who lives in a strange world called Chimera. After her world is turned upside down by some mysterious orchestrators, she begins to discover her destiny.

After finding a magical key to lead her to her parents, who disappeared many years previously, she travels through time to a strange destination. Earth. This tale is overall about Willow and her link to the Lost City of Atlantis.

MJ Rain’s tale is an easy but pleasant read. Her writing lacks description at times but what she does describe in detail is so magical and enchanting that you will want to be on Chimera with Willow.  The concept of the story is fascinating, if it were ever to become a film, the directors and designers would be ecstatic with the sets and costume they could play and experiment with.

MJ Rain repeats words too often in a short space of time and needs to come up with alternate words for ‘said’ and ‘asked’. In many of her paragraphs, she will repeat the same word multiple times, such as ‘boat’ which becomes distracting and is not something she wants to get into the habit of. Occasionally, she will tell the reader something outright rather than describe it. For example, Willow loves coffee and needs it to wake up and function on a day to day basis. Instead of letting the reader figure this out for themselves, she tells them straight away that Willow needs coffee to function. This happens a few times throughout the book which takes away some much needed mystery. Linked to this is how Willow and her Prince Charming fall in love. Much like in The Hunger Games first film, the audience do no witness the development between two characters which leads to them falling in love.

The book is written in first person narrative which this writer (*points to self*) is not a massive fan of because it feels like writers then put themselves too much into their characters which happens in this novel.

However, for every negative, there is a positive. For a first attempt at a book, the writing may not be spot on, but the story is. It was impossible to put this book down and any Young Adult fan will love it.

MJ Rain manages to incorporate little tidbits into the story which she creates into on-going jokes. These are hilarious and lovely to read. My favourite one has included the use of refrigerator; that joke has me giggling every time it’s mentioned.

There are points where the reader will ingest some information and smile because it is clear how much thought MJ Rain has put into the story and linked it together well, no matter how small it may seem to begin with.

Her characters are bright and lively with some quirky personalities that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The first book, A Telltale Secret, has beautifully set up the second book, A Telltale Heart, to continue and develop the main storyline.

Despite the occasional sketchy bit of writing, MJ Rain’s A Telltale Secret is a must read! It won’t take long to read it so if you have a free weekend, this would be a perfect read.

Although it was previously stated that the book has not yet been released, there is some good news for those of you who are passionate about this. The release date is April 10th, 2014, but if you really can’t wait, which we all know you can’t, it can be ordered right now from her publishers’ website at this address http://brokenbarspublishing.webs.com/apps/webstore/.
