Will Grayson, Will Grayson is a collaborative novel by the amazing mind of John Green (who brought you The Fault in our Stars and Looking for Alaska) and the fantastic David Levithan (Boy Meets Boy, The Realm of Possibility.)
As you can tell by the title, there are two Will Grayson’s, both protagonists, with Green writing the chapters for one and Levithan writing the chapters for the other. It remained on the New-York Times Children’s Best Sellers list for
three weeks.
Now, to the plot. Will Grayson tries to live a normal, quiet life as much as possible. However his best friend, Tiny Cooper, whom has been described as "the world's largest person who is really, really gay" makes this extremely difficult. Tiny is also in the process of writing and directing an autobiographical play. will grayson on the other hand holds on tight to an online relationship with someone that calls themselves Isaac. He believes Isaac is the only thing good about his life and arranges to meet with him one day. However we later find out that Isaac was actually an alias used by Maura, one of will’s high school peers. It is because of these events that will meets Tiny and they inevitably fall in love with each other.
Of course, as you would expect from both Green and Levithan, the book is well written, has a relatively good plot and a small but good selection of characters. However, I’m sure that you can sense a but. Compared to other works by the authors separately, Will Grayson, Will Grayson is not on the same level of extremely well written plots with wonderfully developed characters and a natural feel. In fact, this book seems almost perhaps a bit forced.
The book is not a bad thing at all. It is a good read, holds your attention (which is always key) and it is impossible for the ending to not make you smile. It’s just not up to standard to their other work. However I would still recommend it to anyone who wanted to read anything light hearted and that would bring a smile to your face, which is the norm for both Green and Levithan, who have created fan bases for themselves because of their highly enjoyable books.
Easy to read, humorous at times and a fully developed plot, you can’t go wrong with this book.
