In the world of the Shadow Hunters in The Mortal Instruments, written by Cassandra Clare, it is a considered a taboo subject to be homosexual. One of the main characters, Alec Lightwood, is attracted to men yet has to hide this from everyone he cares about or risk being exiled by not only his family, but their society and entire way of life too.
Eventually, it is revealed that they had known for a long time. His sister loved him and so didn’t care and did everything she could to keep it a secret from their parents. His friend doubted Alec actually had feelings for him and called him out on it, revealing that he did not, in fact, love him. He was in love with someone else.
Alec is in a relationship with an immortal Warlock called Magnus Bane. Though they are in love, Magnus is hurt by Alec’s denial and attempts at hiding who he is. Alec decides to come out to his parents in the end who are shocked but the Clave, their law enforcers, are too concerned about the fate of their Shadowhunting world to care. Alec chose a good time to come out. His parents would eventually accept that he was gay but would not approach the subject with him. Instead they decided to continue living as normal and still loved their son.
Despite the Clave’s usual harsh punishment, Alec decided to sacrifice life as he knew it for his love. This helped the Clave realise, along with current events, that people’s sexuality was not an issue for them; especially when Alec dating Magnus Bane meant that he was now a powerful ally of the Shadowhunters.
