The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare is a series teeming with diversity in terms of sexuality. Previously, we looked at lesbian representation in the series. In this article, we look at the character of Magnus Bane.

Magnus Bane is an important character in The Mortal Instruments book series, by Cassandra Clare. During the books, he was in a homosexual relationship with Alec Lightwood. Magnus is a powerful Wizard who is well respected and feared by all.

Magnus Bane is immortal and so has already lived hundreds of years. He has had many relationships, some of which have been with men and others with women. One notable woman he was with was Vampire Camille.

His other previous relationships were with ex-girlfriend, Etta; and ex-boyfriend Woolsey Scott. This information is revealed as Alec feels threatened when he finds out that Magnus is bisexual and realises he knows little about his past relationships and gets jealous.

Magnus is open with his sexuality. He is a powerful individual who is an ally to the Shadowhunters while he and Alec are together. He is gentle and kind yet terrifying. He is a three dimensional character and is a badass.

Cassandra Clare tries hard to depict her homosexual characters as regular people and, although I’m not a huge fan of her writing, she does this very well; except for when it’s Magnus because he’s just special and kicks everyone else’s ass. Alec and Magnus are probably my favourite couple in the entire series so you can imagine my reaction whenever they have difficulties.
