Yes, Matilda has already been made into a film, as well as a hit (and extremely faithful) musical. However, there is talk of re-doing the famous Roald Dahl novel, originally published in 1988. This time, it would be an adaptation of the musical, which is one of the most faithful adaptations of a book to ever surface. The book was illustrated by famed illustrator, Quentin Blake and has since become one of Roald Dahl's most famous works.
This is difficult. However, Kerry Ingram is probably one of the best, and also has the experience. She was one of four girls to originate the role of Matilda in the original London production. The role of Matilda requires the actress to be mischievous, fun, bright and creative. Kerry’s got a mischievous look to her, as well as a sense of vulnerability. Kerry can portray serious, happy, angry or excited in the matter of seconds. She is also a bit of character actress, which is rather required for the role, as Matilda most definitely has quite a bit of character. While Kerry is now 15, she could more than easily pass for Matilda, and is more than well suited for the role.
Yes, that’s right – a man’s been put down for the roll of Agatha Trunchbull. The horror! Now, keep reading. If Bertie were to be cast, he would have some awfully big shoes (no pun intended) to fill. Pam Ferris was Miss Trunchbull – she brought the character to life. However, Bertie has some experience. In the show, Miss Trunchbull is played by a man, and it works. Bertie not only originated the role in London, where the show first started, he also originated the role on Broadway. Bertie was nominated, and won, numerous awards for his portrayal. He made the role his own, while still living up to the reputation of being nasty. Bertie made Miss Trunchbull the absolute villain we all grew up with.
The role desperately needs a character, or else it won’t work. Bertie is beyond capable of this. The person portraying the Trunch needs to be able to portray heinous, rude, sarcastic, and not afraid to do whatever it takes to get what they want – all characteristics of Miss Trunchbull. Bertie can do this absolutely brilliantly. He also adopts a voice that just makes him that much more suited for the role.
This was a tough one, as there are many who could play Miss Honey. Miss Honey is pretty, while still a bit plain. She is kind, loving, a bit vulnerable, and willing to stand up for anyone she cares about and loves. The actress needs to be able to portray emotions well, which Drew is able to. Using her role in Never Been Kissed as an example, Drew’s character Josie goes from nerdy, shy and a target, to being completely kick –ass. Miss Honey is a bit shy, and a target of her aunt (Miss Trunchbull). In the end, however, with Matilda’s assistance, Miss Honey ends up getting the greatest revenge on her aunt – being successful. Drew is capable of portraying the strength, emotions, and more of Miss Honey. She also has the looks (which are sorted of needed for this role) for Miss Honey.
There would be no change for these two roles. Danny and Rhea were perfect as the Wormwoods. They played slimy, reality television obsessed, uncaring parents perfectly. However, if they were to be re-casted, Paul Kaye and Josie Walker would fit just fine.
Matilda is a brilliant book, full of fun, adventure and a little bit of mischief. Let us know who you think could be cast in Matilda.
