Most people know Amber Benson as Tara Maclay from the long running TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Since then, Benson has continued to work as an actress but hasn’t stopped there. Being the creative lady she is, Amber Benson has applied her talents to writing, and (drum roll, please) will be releasing a new book. Actually, not just a “new book” but the first in a series! The Witches of Echo Park is set to hit bookshops on January 6th.

When Elyse’s great aunt, Eleanora, falls deathly ill, Elyse rushes back to Los Angeles and returns to Echo Park where she discovers the secrets that Eleanora has been keeping for her. Elyse is expected to take her great aunt’s place in the Echo Park’s coven of witches but accepting her destiny will lead to her doom. The world of magic is under threat and the battle the witches face may be their last.

First impressions? Sounds amazing. It’s clear that Benson’s fascination with all things magical is ongoing and will continue to shine through in her work. The two female characters, Elyse and Eleanora, lead an impressively powerful and impactful coven which was something really important to Benson in the writing process stating that she wanted to write a series about women and their relationships outside the world of talking about men. She felt that the best way of doing that would be to create a world centred around a coven of witches.

As a lover of all things fantasy, this is definitely a book that will be added to my wish list. It encompasses so many aspects of fantasy and reading that I love as it draws from not only the mythology of magic but the psychology of it. The difference between being intuitive or there actually being some form of magic at work that we are unconsciously tapping in to. An inspiration to Benson whilst creating the story of Elyse.

There has been some debate on the jump the Amber Benson has made from actress to author and whether it was brave or reckless. It is clear that Benson has the imagination to whip up a brilliant idea for a story but we can only make a clear judgement once we have read the book for ourselves. Obviously, Benson is in love with the fantasy world as much as anyone else is and is excited to share her story with those who love fantasy just as much. Whether she came meet the expectations for her quality of writing is up to us readers to decide. I look forward to making the judgement.

The Witches of Echo Park is available January 6th 2015!
