It's been over a year since Iain M. He had great success writing literary and genre fiction, but it's hard to deny that The Culture, his anarchist, post-scarcity space Utopia, is his most lasting and famous creation. By the IWG Book Team The Elevator Pitch, that terrifying thing where you have to sell your entire concept for your book/film/TV show in the length of time it takes to travel in a lift. The I'm With Geek site have all come together to create pitches for their sections given a title to work from, and now, it is the Book Team's turn to present our own ideas under the title of Rings in the Rainbow. How have our team interpreted the title, and whose pitch is the best? Check them out below (a couple even have accompanying book covers!), and be sure to let us know your favourite in the comments! by Emlyn Roberts-Harry H.P. Lovecraft is possibly the most influential horror writer of all time, up there with the likes of Edgar Allen Poe. Countless other authors have used his work as a springboard, from the direct continuations of the Cthulhu Mythos by August Derleth, all the way through to the Dungeon Dimensions of Terry Pratchett's Discworld. There's scope for horror and comedy in his cosmic abominations, and Equoid is an excellent blend of the two. by Emlyn Roberts-Harry While it's generally not a good idea to outright ignore your fans, it is important that creators not fall into the trap of simply giving them what they think they want. Listening to fans' demands rather than doing what you want to do is a slippery slope, especially in the internet age when everyone has feelings of entitlement and can easily make the whole world hear their grievances. By Emlyn Roberts-Harry Come on. With a title like that, you know you have to read this. If the story's anywhere near as good as the title, you're surely in for something pretty special - and fortunately, Six-Gun Snow White is every bit as great as it sounds. It's essentially a mash-up of the original fairytale, American folklore and Westerns, and while I'll be the first to admit that such a combination is practically tailor-made to appeal to me, there's really no getting around that this is still a brilliant fantasy story in its own right. It transplants the familiar Snow White story to the American West, reimagining the heroine as a half-white, half-Native American girl whose mother dies shortly after she's born. |
