Marketing magic happens long before the final product lands on the shelf. They want us all hooked, compelled and decided to buy the book before we can even touch or smell the pages, slide our fingers down adroitly designed covers, feel the weight or whatever our fetish is. They need us to love the concept before many of the details are revealed. Early readers’ attention secure sales. Book trailers, growing in popularity, come in aid and work in favour of teasing one’s appetite. Here is what we think is essential when creating one.

Book trailers, growing in popularity, come in aid and work in favour of teasing one’s appetite. Here is what we think is essential when creating one. by Agnieszka Ramian If not for Sophie Hannah, perhaps, a new Poirot novel would not have happened at all. Now, after we have investigatedall things Agatha Christie, it is time to shed some light on her, appointed by the guardians of Christie’s legacy, successor – Sophie Hannah. Why her? Is she nearly as eccentric as Christie was? Does she possess a mysterious mind? What did it mean to her to be entrusted such a honourable task? With us you will find out this and more; another great literary person gets introduced today. By Agnieszka Ramian What a fortunate coincidence we have not introduced Agatha Christie yet as it's the perfect timing now, when a new novel featuring detective Hercule Poirot is due to be released. Following the news we have published recently, the spotlightnow shifts to the originator of the whole creative concept, Poirot’s maker; ladies and gentleman – Agatha Christie! We will be looking into her life and creative output today. Can we discover why she was driven so much to crime mystery stories? Who was Poirot’s progenitor? Was she a fulfilled author? What did her life look like when she was not writing? How were the times she was living in influencing her as a female author? Sit tightly, an investigation starts now! By Agnieszka Ramian Agatha Christie’s legacy lives on. One of the best-selling crime fiction authors of all times, if the idea of selling more than two billion copies of one’s novels is even conceivable, brought something to this world – a unique talent, exceptional penmanship, a mysterious mind - that is not to be surpassed, but certainly is set to inspire through generations. If there is such a place called |Heaven though, Christie must be smiling upon us knowing that one of the most famous and loved characters that she created will be in good hands and – detective Hercule Poirot – will be resurrected and once again engaged in exciting investigations. How, one may wonder? by Agnieszka Ramian Count-down goes on and it is only few weeks left till much awaited The Discworld Convention 2014 combined with The Ankh-Morpork Grand Exhibition (coincidental mix, so they jokingly say). The event taking place from the 8th to 11th of August at the Palace Hotel, in Manchester, UK, has SOLD OUT already. The comers from all over the world are expected, which makes it even harder to acknowledge the announcement that Sir Terry Pratchett had made on the Convention’s official web page: http://www.dwcon.org/ . We are very sorry to share this news with you, but the most anticipated guest will not be able to attend a four-day long celebration in his honour. By Agnieszka Ramian Are we feeling particularly “maply” today? Must be Canada Day! We took a literary journey through all things Canada; been here and there, checked dark alleys, took a walk of memories, investigated what is fancied nowadays and learnt who is in the spotlight, but still we have only touched upon the surface of what Canada has to offer. Amongst many things to explore, we thought that Canadian Literary Contests and Awards is something that should not be overlooked on this day and, at the same time, something we tend to know awfully little about. Let’s shake off this shame, shall we? By Agnieszka Ramian We all know of that author who, even though long gone – for nearly a century now - remained unsurpassed in his genre. The novels he created, hanging between naturalism and romanticism, with a hint of adventure and strongly influenced by autobiographical motifs, are known for an unbeatably unique atmosphere and show a rough nature of things, sometimes beautiful and other times brutal. This particular author chose for the vast Canadian woodlands to play a significant part in the plot of his stories, after having drawn his attention. Reading it almost felt like smelling the wet soil in the forest, stepping on the dry stick that warns prey of the threat, touching a pine-cone sticky with tree juices and feeling a chill like needles with my own senses. This American writer is best known even nowadays for his, one could call them, sister stories revolving around two canine hybrids partially belonging to the human world and partially to the wild, but spinning in the opposite directions. Enough clues yet? A lonesome howling of a wolf or perhaps a dog in the silent night under full moon should give it away, no doubt. By Agnieszka Ramian In the next few minutes you are going to make yourselves familiar with Haruki Murakami’s new novel to be released by Harvill Secker publishing that incorporates the most aberrant but refreshing marketing initiative we have come across in the book industry. First, you would wonder whether it is the author’s quirkiness breaking out. Then, you will most likely come to conclusion that it must be a children’s publication. The answers however are ‘NO’ and ‘NO’, which you will realize shortly. By Agnieszka Ramian A publishing legend and famed entrepreneur, Felix Dennis, sadly passed away on the 22nd June at his home in Dorsington after a“long and painful battle with cancer” . We face a departure of a man of many talents and a great source of creative initiatives he had been taking throughout his life. He will be sorely missed, but remembered for countless notable deeds and achievements. By Agnieszka Ramian First awarded in 1976, the annual British Fantasy Awards are running for another consecutive year. Administrated by The British Fantasy Society, they see great and well-established artists competing against upcoming and promising ones under various categories. It is beyond the tough choice to select the winners, but the jury has already made an attempt to do so by narrowing the list of participants to four nominees per category (with the exception for the Best Short Story category that holds two inseparable stories that were both short-listed) plus no more than two further nominees in each category, added by the juries as “egregious omissions” under the rules. Book related categories seem to be making up the biggest part of the competition. This year, awards for writers will be presented to the winners under seven exciting categories, as presented below. |
