Valentine's Day: It's a Kind of Magic

2/14/2015

It's a Kind of Magic by Carole Matthews is a romance novel with a magical twist, as it is aptly named. The story, however, was not what I expected based on the blurb. The colourful, romantic and magical cover drew me in and promised intrigue. I couldn't wait to read it, but was I in for a surprise.

Review: Howl's Moving Castle (SPOILERS)

1/5/2015

PictureOne of Howl's many book covers, much like his variety of doors!
By Gemma Williams

Contrary to my usual reading habits, I first watched Howl's Moving Castle, many years before even acquiring the book. It was weird, random, made little sense, and was absolutely wonderful. My hopes when reading the book would be that there would be some kind of explanation to the story but that it would be equally wonderful and magical.

The story follows young Sophie Hatter who is put under a curse by a witch. She sets out to discover herself and finds a new home in Howl's Moving Castle. Evil rumours are spread about Howl and so she should be wary as she enters the magical, random and utterly ridiculous castle.

It has taken me a while to jump on to the bandwagon of this series, written by Sarah J. Maas. I had heard so many great things about it that I was scared it wouldn't meet my expectations. I was afraid that the characters would be one dimensional, fall into the usual love triangle trap, and a story that had more or less been done before. So how did my expectations affect my reading of the book, and did it meet these fears of mine?

It's been a long journey. Five Percy Jackson and the Olympian (PJO) books, and finally, five books in the Heroes of Olympus (HoO) series. Ten books set in a wonderfully magical world, yet was this highly anticipated book everything we expected it be, and how was the series overall?

Review: The Giver

9/29/2014

To celebrate the release of the film, The Giver, I decided to read the book before going to see the film. I had heard a mixture of opinions about the book and thought I'd make my own opinion on it.

The Giver takes place in a seemingly Utopian society and follows a young boy named Jonas. There were reviews saying that this one was the best books they had ever read, and others claiming that it was slow paced and boring. Here's my opinion:

Book Trailer: Neil Patrick Harris - Choose Your Own Autobiography

9/17/2014

I am not a huge fan of Autobiographical books. I have only ever read one in my entire life and whereas it was entertaining enough, I still prefer to live my world of fantasy. There is one autobiography, however, that I just absolutely must get my hands on and I'm sure many of you will agree, especially after watching the unique book trailer to advertise it. Neil Patrick Harris is releasing an autobiography, but it's not like any you've ever read before...
