Video book trailers are a nifty idea. Even if you’re not a fan of a well-established author, a well-made preview will still attract your attention and might even tempt you into buying a book you would never otherwise have glanced at. Publishing giants Hodder & Stoughton know this, and they’ve done a good job of the recent spat of meta-trailers for Stephen King’s new book, Mr. Mercedes. Not that the likes of King really need any promo work at this point. Sort your budget allocation out, Hod-Stough.
Annie in fact gives us very little information – merely a brief quip about strangers’ motivations set to an animation of her wielding an axe at the hobbled hero of Misery – so we’ll do that for you. Thanks, Hod-Stough.
The plot concerns a troubled cop coming out of retirement after being taunted by a demented serial killer (hooray originality) and trying to stop a tirade of violence against random victims. It’s still riddled with classic King silliness, of course – the antagonist murders people by driving his car into them, hence the name, and “loves the feel of death under the wheels”. If you want to know how he somehow escapes in his prized Merc after crashing it into a building full of people, well, you’ll just have to buy the book. Perhaps that was King’s crafty plan all along.
