It is day three of the short promo book trailers being released, preluding the big exposure of highly anticipated Mr Mercedes by Stephen King. Each day until June 3rd, which is the day of novel’s release, the world gets to see another short character trailer which uses King's former book characters to introduce the big unknown, aka Mr Mercedes. The honours of narrating the third one out of five trailers planned will do, this time, Pennywise from IT (1986 horror novel).
Whenever Pennywise was making his appearance, before revealing his true nature being fangs and the face of a monster, he was still far from looking funny or nice. His overall look and voice were not to be trusted from the very first moment, however kids proved to be easy targets and were easily tricked by his tempting colourful costume and painted face, and an offer of receiving a balloon filled with helium. Pennywise was not only a merciless killer and dreadful creature but there is more about him that meets the eye.
Now, who could possibly introduce a serial killer better if not another character that enjoys the bloodshed of the innocent? The third promo uses key motives known from the book IT and a movie. We see a balloon filled with helium, with the face of the clown painted over, floating in what seems to be a canal. The scene starts with passing through a storm drain, which is a direct reference to the way in which IT starts, and then there is a tunnel with the light at its very end, which makes me think of nothing else but omen of death. Pennywise narrates in very scary voice that gives unpleasant goose-bumps. There is a creepy laughter in the background and with no warning the balloon pops, revealing that it was filled with blood which now sprinkles around forming a demonic face.
Minding the knowledge gathered so far regarding Mr Mercedes presumably twisted personality, what else can we read from this message? Surely, Mr Mercedes and Pennywise have a bloodlust and joy of taking lives from the innocent in common. I think it also implies that Mr Mercedes will mostly perform in disguise and everything about him will be not what it seems to be until it ‘pops’.
